A federal appeals court has upheld the rulings of a lower court that sentenced two men to death for the drug-debt slaying of a family of four on the side of the Turnpike in St. Lucie County.
The 11th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta considered three arguments raised by Daniel Troya and Ricardo Sanchez Jr. in an appeal. Lawyers for Troya and Sanchez had challenged lower court rulings on the admission of certain evidence and the admission and exclusion of specific expert testimony.
Troya and Sanchez were sentenced separately in 2009 for the 2006 killings. They each got two death sentences, for the two child victims, and five life terms. The sentencings marked the first federal death sentences in Florida since the federal government reinstated capital punishment in 1988.
